(Not so) Happy New Year?
Today I want to talk you through my 10 step process for a successful 2018. But first, thank you to everyone who has been in touch over the Christmas break and the New Year. I received so many lovely emails from coaching clients and followers wishing me well and showing support for my work. It’s genuinely amazing to hear how much you enjoy my weekly newsletters and I’m so grateful to have you here.
I also heard from a few people who aren’t where they wanted to be. January can be a very motivational and inspiring time for some, but for others it can be a very different story. For some it can actually lead to a huge sense of overwhelm.
So, grab yourself: a pen, a pad, a coffee. Put on some uplifting music and let’s get started together!
I want you to answer these 10 questions 3 times with these 3 areas in mind - Business, Relationships, Money.
What worked in 2017?
When you look back at the year, ask yourself which specific parts were good. What do you look back at and and think ‘I was good at that’ or ‘I was really proud with the way I did that’. It can be the tiniest mini win or just a 10 second conversation, it doesn’t need to be huge achievements.
What didn’t work in 2017?
Again look back and ask yourself about things you did that didn’t sit well, didn’t align with your motivations. Think about the moments that caused you worry or anxiety and what you were thinking to lead you to feel this way.
What was your happiest time in your life?
Let’s think bigger than just 2017. And you don’t just need to restrict this to your adult life. Think of the time when you were most happy, most alive. Don’t add the filter of ‘But I was a child/student/employee/wealthy so I was bound to be happy.’ Happiness is happiness, regardless.
What are you doing when you are most happy?
Be precise and think about what you were doing. This can be a type of work, a particular client, an activity, a state of mind, a place. Be very specific.
Who are you with when you are most happy?
This might be friends, it might be family but also think of the ‘types’ of people that you’re around when you are most happy. Build a profile of your very own ‘happy clan’.
When you complete your annual review for 2018, what would you like it to say?
For this you’re going to think forward. When you’re doing this same exercise next year, what do you want to be saying worked well this year. Don’t add limitations, think and look deep, what will your best year look like?
Specifically what do you want to achieve in the next 12 months?
Be specific. What do you want? Don’t worry about the how/where/when.
What’s your biggest challenge or struggle?
Be honest with yourself and look back at question 2. Just because something is a struggle it shouldn’t mean we close the door on it. Some of my weaknesses as a child are my strengths now. Anyone can learn anything, I firmly believe that.
Where can you get help or support for this?
Who do you know that can offer you some support in these areas? This could be friends, colleagues, industry specialists, coaches, online tutorials. Help is everywhere, you just have to go and find it.
What’s your big dream?
My favourite question is always saved for last. This isn’t just for 2018, this has no restrictions or timelines. Many people really struggle with this question and won’t even give themselves the permission to dream big. So I am, unequivocally, giving you full and absolute permission to dream as big as you want to. Go big, really big. Ask yourself if there was absolutely no limit to what you could have, what would you ask for? If you’re anything like me, you will feel the burn of excitement in your tummy as you answer this question. Go big guys!
So what should you do with this information?
Well by the time you’ve completed this exercise you’ll be feeling ready to take on the world (especially if you have the uplifting music on!)
But, you’ll also have:
- What you can do better this year
- What you should do more of
- How you can guarantee happiness
- Who to surround yourself with
- What you’re going to achieve this year
- How you’re going to achieve it
Plus, by creating your BIG DREAM, you’ve given yourself permission to think in a bigger way about what you’re capable of achieving in your life. I’m going to be talking more and more about mindset over the year but this first step is a huge part of creating your destiny.
I’d absolutely LOVE to hear how you get on with this exercise so please do get in touch. I want you to know that I personally read and respond to any emails I receive so please don’t be shy 🙂
With love + success
